鯉のぼり（こいのぼり）とは？ / What is Koinobori?

こいのぼりは、日本の伝統的な風習のひとつで、5月5日のこどもの日に家庭や公共の場所で掲げられる鯉の形をしたカラフルな吹き流しです。鯉は力強く川を遡る魚として知られ、子どもの健やかな成長と成功を願う象徴とされています。

Koinobori are traditional Japanese carp-shaped windsocks displayed at homes and public places on Children’s Day, May 5th. The carp is known for its strength in swimming upstream, symbolizing a wish for children’s healthy growth and success.

歴史 / History

こいのぼりの風習は江戸時代（17～19世紀）に始まったとされ、武家の家で男児の誕生を祝うために旗を立てたことが起源とされています。やがて庶民の間にも広がり、現代ではこどもの日に男の子だけでなく、すべての子どもの成長を祝う風習として親しまれています。

The tradition of koinobori is believed to have started in the Edo period (17th–19th century), when samurai families would raise banners to celebrate the birth of a son. Over time, it spread to common households, and today, it is a tradition to celebrate the healthy growth of all children on Children’s Day.

特徴 / Features

• デザイン（Design）: 一般的に、黒い鯉（父）、赤い鯉（母）、青い鯉（子供）を含む複数の鯉が飾られる。
  Typically, multiple carp are displayed, with a black carp representing the father, a red carp for the mother, and a blue carp for the children.
• 素材（Material）: 昔は和紙や絹で作られていたが、現在はナイロンやポリエステル製が主流。
  Traditionally made from washi paper or silk, modern koinobori are usually crafted from nylon or polyester.
• 設置方法（How They Are Displayed）: 竿の先端に回転球や吹き流しをつけ、風を受けて泳ぐように設置される。
  Mounted on poles with rotating spheres and streamers, allowing them to “swim” in the wind.

• 群馬・館林こいのぼりの里まつり（Tatebayashi Koinobori Carp Streamer Village Festival, Gunma）: 世界記録にも登録された、数千匹のこいのぼりが飾られるイベント。毎年3月下旬から5月上旬にかけて開催。
