絵馬 / Ema

絵馬は、日本の神社や寺で願い事を書くための木製の板です。参拝者は自分の願いを書き、絵馬掛けに奉納します。元々、神様に馬を捧げる風習がありましたが、実際に馬を奉納する代わりに馬の絵を描いた板を奉納するようになったことが絵馬の由来とされています。そのため、「絵」と「馬」という漢字が使われています。

Ema are wooden plaques/wish tablets found at Japanese shrines and temples, on which visitors write their wishes or prayers before hanging them up. Originally, people would offer horses to the gods, but over time, they began offering wooden plaques with horse illustrations instead. This is why the characters for “Ema” mean “picture” (絵) and “horse” (馬).

歴史 / History

絵馬の習慣は奈良時代（8世紀）に始まったとされ、貴族や武士が神仏に祈願するために使用していました。時代が経つにつれ、庶民の間にも広まり、現在では誰でも気軽に願いを書いて奉納することができます。

The tradition of ema dates back to the Nara period (8th century), when nobles and samurai used them to pray to deities and Buddhas. Over time, the practice spread to the general public, and today anyone can write their wishes and dedicate an ema.
